{"id":13037,"date":"2026-01-23T14:44:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T14:44:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pourlasolidarite.eu\/?post_type=news&#038;p=13037"},"modified":"2026-04-09T10:08:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T10:08:53","slug":"self-determination-and-disability-resources-developed-by-raavi","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/pourlasolidarite.eu\/en\/news\/self-determination-and-disability-resources-developed-by-raavi\/","title":{"rendered":"Self-determination and disability: resources developed by RAAVI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These two resources are part of RAAVI\u2019s ambition to renew professional, organizational and managerial practices in health and social care establishments and services, in order to promote environments that respect the rights, choices and participation of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<h2>Tools that promote self-determination !<\/h2>\n<div>Last May, the partners of the RAAVI project (APF France Handicap, Pour La Solidarit\u00e9, AVIQ, VAPH, the University of Lille, and the University of Li\u00e8ge) launched a mapping of tools. Over several months, they collected tools from the Hauts-de-France region, Wallonia, and Flanders. As a result, more than one hundred French- and Dutch-language tools were identified.<\/div>\n<div>The tools and resources included in this resource bank are diverse both in form and origin. Some stem from scientific research and studies, others have been developed from field practice, while others are resources produced or supported by public authorities. They all aim to support the development of practices, approaches, and organizational models that foster self-determination.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raavi-project.eu\/fr\/boites-a-outils\/recensement-des-outils\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This resource bank is now freely accessible on the RAAVI website.<\/a> It is divided into four broad thematic categories:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>from the right to self-determination to the expression of choices and personal plans;<\/li>\n<li>development of individual self-determination skills;<\/li>\n<li>an enabling environment;<\/li>\n<li>transformation of professional and organizational practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>A literature review to establish the theoretical foundations\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>The literature review provides an overview of current knowledge on the topic and highlights the main issues, barriers, and drivers linked to self-determination throughout the life course.<\/div>\n<div>Written by the University of Li\u00e8ge and Ghent University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with VAPH and the University of Lille, the literature review was also enriched by the views of experts in the field and of people directly concerned, including self-advocates.<\/div>\n<div>The literature review is structured around six main sections:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>a reflection on the contemporary understanding of disability, presenting the social model, international guidelines on inclusion and participation, as well as the importance of intersectionality and the relational dimension;<\/li>\n<li>an overview of the different theoretical models of self-determination;<\/li>\n<li>an analysis of the self-determination of people with disabilities, covering various areas of life such as housing, sexuality, and end-of-life issues;<\/li>\n<li>a study of self-determination during childhood;<\/li>\n<li>a study of self-determination in adulthood;<\/li>\n<li>a study of self-determination in later life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>The review concludes with 10 key messages:<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Disability is a social construct.<\/li>\n<li>Intersectionality must be recognized.<\/li>\n<li>An ecological perspective should be adopted.<\/li>\n<li>Self-determination improves quality of life.<\/li>\n<li>Individualization is essential;<\/li>\n<li>Effective organizational strategies combine several enabling factors.<\/li>\n<li>Political self-determination goes beyond accessibility.<\/li>\n<li>Childhood is a crucial period.<\/li>\n<li>The transition to adulthood requires a supportive environment.<\/li>\n<li>With age, the risk of double stigmatization increases.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raavi-project.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Literature-review-RAAVI.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The literature review is available in French, Dutch, and English<\/a>. An Easy Read version is also available.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><strong>RAAVI \u2013 Rethinking self-determination, acting for an inclusive life<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>RAAVI is supported by the Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen programme. The project was officially launched in March 2025 during its kick-off event. Its aim is to transform the way people with disabilities are supported by promoting self-determination, respecting their rights, and building a shared culture of support across the three territories.
